Welcome to the Coalfields website.

English Partnerships is the national regeneration agency, supporting high quality sustainable growth across the country. It is a key delivery agency for the urban renaissance and the government’s new Sustainable Communities agenda.

A key area of English Partnerships’ work is the National Coalfields Programme, which has a ten-year lifetime and a ring-fenced budget of over £385m. This programme aims to deliver:

English Partnerships has undertaken a review of the sustainable energy opportunities across the portfolio of coalfields sites. The review found that the coalfields portfolio presents a unique opportunity for English Partnerships to establish a responsible approach to energy supply and demand as a key factor in realising its mission.

If the current development plans, for all the sites examined, are realised, the likely future energy demand will be around 658GWh/year of heat and around 166GWh/year of electricity. This would lead to an additional 196,450 tonnes of CO2 being emitted annually into the atmosphere if the energy demand is met from national grid electricity and gas. At the same time, exploiting the renewable energy resource potential of the portfolio could lead to the generation of 158GWh/year of renewable heat (biomass and solar water heating) and over 850GWh/year of renewable electricity (wind and solar PV). Tables 0.1 and 0.2 present the summary energy demand and supply figures.
